Review: Apokolips (Director: Allan Spijkers)
Four very different people are thrown together into a room to seek shelter from the anticipated apocalypse in the Indy spirit worx production, Apokolips.
This Afrikaans production features the uptight Mana (Clerissa Bester), jovial Jason (Lesego Molotsi), hardcore Ivada (Dominique Fourie) and disturbed Petrus (Brandon Marais). Their personalities are worlds but should the world end, and if these are their last moments, they all need to come to terms with the disappointments and failures made during their lives.
With its balance of wit and terror, Apokolips would most likely still translate to a non-Afrikaans-speaking audience.
Fantastic sound effects by Allan Spijkers in the intimate venue of the Chapel assist in an authentic depiction of the ferocious storm. He seemed to be a jack-of-all-trades in this production and yet managed to master all.
Lighting by Lightship was simple but dramatic effects were not needed to better tell the story.
The actors seemed comfortable in their roles and quick on their cues. I was intimidated by Ivada (Fourie) and her cut-throat role. On the other hand, I enjoyed the quirks that Jason (Molotsi) made. It was obvious that they were experienced and professional. -Bonita du Plessis
