Review: Maestros of Lampoonery

Maestros of Lampoonery

Maestros of Lampoonery, directed by Leandri Klopper, takes audiences into the mind of lead character Carmen, played by Riandi van Wyk, as she searches for a better life. The performance blurs the line between reality and imagination. The characters go through the motions of structure to find the perfect portrayal of a flawless, content and problem-free person. Invented personas play out various scenarios in an attempt to create the perfect character.
Klopper’s use of monologues and voiceovers generates a straightforward satirical show, as the characters mock and ridicule (lampoon) each other in their quest. They each try to outdo their predecessors.
Although the performance was original, noteworthy and had smooth transitions with a few memorable moments that left the audiences chuckling, the theme was somewhat confusing during the initial parts of the play. This tongue-and-cheek satire is a feel -good comedy that ensures the audience will leave the theatre with a smile. - Aimee Delagey
